Story of Chess Playing Monkey

Every visitor wanted to play a game with first world champion Paul Morphy . So Morphy taught this monkey to to play with weaker players. Once an English player was playing chess with this monkey while Morphy was in an other room. Suddenly he heard monkey screaming and rushed back to room. He saw that monkey was sitting on ceiling fan and was screaming. "What's the matter ", he asked the player. " I am really sorry ", said player "He check-mated me and I was so upset that I hit him in anger". "Please ask him to play another game I promise not to touch him again", English man pleaded. Monkey was reluctant to play with him but agreed to play when Morphy offered him a banana. After some time Morphy again heard monkey's shout and saw that he was again hanging from fan. Morphy turned to other player. "I did not touch him and don't know what happened ", replied Englishman " after making his last move he started screaming for no reason". Morphy looked at the board and said "Oh, he saw this mate in three combination and was afraid you might hit him again".

Youth Festival : Kenya

Mrs Sandhya Deshpande from Kenya sent us some information and photographs about Kenya's national championship for youth. In under - 10 Girls category Sharanya Iyengar ( last year's U-8 champion ) won the title with 4.5/5 points. But last year's U-8 boy's champion Sumit could not retain first place and got only IV place. New champion is Ritvik. Sumit's elder sister Sanjana won a trophy in her category. Here we see young champions with their trophies.

And in picture below Sanjna Deshpande with her trophy. In most cases ( but not always ) boy's champion is about 100-200 points stronger compared to girl's champion in their age group. But Sharanya is at least 300 points ahead of Ritvik in U-10. In fact Ritvik keeps his game very simple and does not lose his pieces easily as you can see in case of Sumit or other players of his age. But he needs to play much stronger if he wants to compete in international tournaments.

Asian Youth Chess Festival - Philippines

Indian players who skipped World School Chess last month were present in full strength at Asian Youth Chess.They won 9 out of possible 18 medals in boys section including 4 golds. But in girls section their domination was complete. They won all 6 six gold medals ( in all 9 medals)!!

World Schools Chess 2011

These championships in age group U-7 to U-17 were held in Poland from April 30 to May 8. In these festival players from East Europe and CIS countries participated in large numbers. But there were few entries from India, China, Vietnam and Iran and USA. Still competetion was tough as usual at that level.Hosts won Gold medals in U-13 Girls and both U-17 events, boys and girls.In U-7 girls category Assubayeva Kazakistan won with 9/9 points,in U-8 boys gold and silver were won by boys from Romania and Turkey. In U-9 girls Kazak girl won with 8.5/9 points.
If you look at older entries you can find a few articals about Kenya's U-8 girls champion Sharanya Iyengar. She played in U-9 girls and got 8th place with 5.5 points. It must be one of the best performance by an African chess player in any tournament at world level. This cute little girl has become a flag bearer of Kenya's chess team.

Our member Bhavya Gupta (age 9+) played in Delhi State Under - 13(Girls) championship
and scored 3/5 point to finish at 9th position. In one of her games she blundered a piece early in opening. Then facing dangerous pin and likely loss of another piece went for attack in following position.

I only publish games of young players but I am publishing one of my games played on playchess.com against a fairly good player so that children can avoid mistake made by my opponent. Game started with 1.e4 c6 2.Nf3 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nd7 5.Bc4 Ngf6 6.Neg5 e6 7.Qe2 . Look at the position after white's 7th move.White's knight is attacking f7 and Bc4 and Qe2 are attacking e6. Black should shut-out Bc4 by Nd5. Instead he played a very natural developing move 7...Be7 after which white simply finishes him off.

8.Nxf7 Kxf7 9.Qxe6 Kg6 10.Nh5 Kh6 11.d4+ g5 12.Nf5 Kg6 13.Qf7 Kxf5 14.Bd3+ Kg4 15.h3+ Kh4 16.g3 #
Question There are two better ways to finish game instead of 10.Nh5. Can you find them ?

   CARS
1- Cars Cars Cars
   All full un jars
   They take us for a ride
   And keep to the side.
2- Children play with cars
   While elders sit in the bars
   Cars drink diesel and petrol
   People drink beers and lose control.

   It seems our young poet is very fond of beer !! In both of his poems he talks about it. One very famous chess player used to visit bubs in London. He would offer a game for a mug of beer. By the time bar closed he already drank too much beer and could not walk but even then he could beat any player there !!

UP State Chess Championship U-7 for 2010

This tournament in finished today in Lucknow. Last year's champion Shivang Joshi lost 2 of his matches to finish third while another favorite Swastik Dehran got a commanding position in a game against Jesica and was trying to finish off his opponent but left his queen on take to lose his game. Finally Jesica finished at first followed by Swastik Dehran and Shivang Joshi. Second girl in the team is Sunaina.

Kenya Under 8 - Boys Champion

We have earlier published a few articles about Kenya Under-8 Girls Champion. Now we are presenting you Sumit S Deshpande who is Kenya's National Champion in Under-8 Boys category. Unfortunately he could not play in WYCC-2010 due to some financial problems. He scored 5 / 7 points to win national title in May 2010. He parents shifted to Nairobi from Banglore when he was only 3 years old and he can speak only English now.

LCA - Did you miss WYCC ?
Sumit - Yes I was very keen to play in Greece .
LCA - How you performed against 3 players representing Kenya in U-8 category.
Sumit - I beat them all !
( Then whom he conceded those 2 points ? Perhaps to tail enders !)
LCA - Who else you can beat ?
Sumit - Every one, my team mates , my father.
LCA - What about your mother and sister ?
Sumit - My mother ? She can not play chess ! And I always beat my sister !
( His sister Sanjana who got 2nd position in U-14 Girls category in national championship was not ready to accept his claim but agreed that score is about 50% )
LCA- What about Sharanya Iyenger , who is your school mate ?
Sumit - Well some times I win some times she wins.
LCA - In which class you are studying and how are you doing in studies.
Sumit - I am in 3rd standered and always get first position in the class.
LCA- Thats very good . What else you like to do?
Sumit - I like to dance ! And I like to play piano !
Sumit - I am a poet and write poems !

Youg Kids Scale Mountain Peaks

Some young kids of Lucknow achieved great success this week. Ayush Pandey an U-9 player got his maiden FIDE ranking of 1691 ! This indicates his bright future in chess. During state men's championship at Kanpur two young players of Lucknow performed very well. Akash Srivastava a ten year old boy scored credible 5.5/10 in that strong field . But most surprising performance was by our student Swastik Dehran who is still in U-7 category. He scored 6/10 points. In such a strong tournament he won 4 games drew another 4 and lost just 2 games. His last round draw was against a FIDE 1885 player !!
We congratulate these boys on their performances and wish more success in future.

Match between UPState U-9 and Keny's U-7 National champion

A series of games were played by Ayush Pandey ( UP state U-9 Champ) and Sharanya Iyengar U-7 girls national champion of Kenya last week. On Sunday Aug 8 Ayush played a mature game. First he shattered Sharnya's q-side pawns then captured one of them. He maintained this advantage inspite of some good dynamic defence by Sharanya and then converted it in a win . On Tuseday too he got advantage in both games ( was piece up in first game) but Sharanya fought well and counter attacked resolutely to win both of them. On Thurseday again Ayush handled opening much better than Sharanaya, who had several weaknesses in pawn structure etc. This time Ayush maintained advantages to win both matches. In another game Ayush lost his queen due to mouse slip. Final score 3-2 in favour of Ayush.
One can easily draw some conclusions
1-Ayush had better opening preparation and positional understanding. What he lacked was killer stint and played some slopy chess to allowed opponent to get away from good positons in game 2 and 3. He needs to be more tough mentally to perform well at nationals.
2-Sharanya played opening badly and got in trouble in most of games. She must understand that isolated pawns are are too weak to defend in long run. And it is very difficult to create enough counter play tactically, against tough opponent , to neutralize positional weaknesses. But her temperament and fighting spirit were better than Ayush.

World Schools Championship

Normally Indian players perform very well in age-group tournaments. But in Turkey we finished with just one bronze in under-7 boys category. Incidently Nimdia Ridit ( India) was youngest participant. He fell asleep after last round game was completed. Then he could not climb himself on victory stand as it was too high for him !!

All the winners got Note-Book computers. Under-7 girls champion found it too heavy to carry so rested a couple of times during long journey from victory stand to waiting parents !! Many players who were out of prize list got chess books. They all enjoyed this well organised tournament.

Players from Russia, Iran and host Turkey dominated championship winning many medals.

Inter School Chess Championship - Lucknow

Modern Indian School Rajaji Puram organised this year's inter school with support of District Chess Sports Association Lucknow. In all 93 players participated in all 4 categories. Number is nothing considering population of city but it better to have something than total inactivity.

Some of my present and old students got prizes. Swastik won primary group with perfect 5/5 .Among the girls Rishika Bhattacharya with 3.5/5 in junior section and Adarshika Srivastava 3/5 in primary section did reasonably well. Mithesh Kaladi who was expected to win highschool could manage only II place.Ayush Pandey who was expeced to win primary group got IIIrd place with 4/4 points as he could join tournament late and missed first round.

Junior Chess Tournament Aliganj Lucknow

After a long lull July saw two inter-school chess tournaments.Black&White Chess Club became active after couple of years and organised a tournament at Modern World Scool Aliganj which was sponsored by Avadh Industrial Training Centre. This club is run by Junaid Ahemad ( ex-state champion). It used to publish a very good chess magazine Black&White also.
They gave Rs15000/ to winners in 2 catagories U-19 and U-13 as under :

First Girl from Lucknow Gets FIDE Rating

One of our old student Rishika Bhattacharya ( Born 1998) became first girl of Lucknow city to get FIDE rating of 1338 in July 2010 list. She got that rating from Delhi Under-2200 tournament in June. Though her rating is very modest but it is a new beginning and we can hope that she will improve it in future and more girls will join her in rating list.

Kenya Under-8 Champion Vs Students of Academy

On Saturday , June 12, Under-8 Chess Champion of Kenya Sharanya played 2 games against Adarshika ( U-9). In the first game Sharanya out played Adarshika but forgot about her queen which was attacked by a knight. After winning queen Adarshika captured several pawns and pieces and was trying to check-mate Sharanya with queen and knight . A desperate check from Sharanya and Adarshika put her king on same file as her queen and lost her queen but she had 2 extra knights so won the game .
In the next game Adarshika handled opening better than first game but missed a mating threat and and was check-mated on 11th move !
Conclusion ? Play badly to win game !!!

Sharanya : 7 & ½ years, my grandmother first taught me chess. My present coach is Latha Sathya.
I play 3 games of chess everyday.

ICA : Do you have any other hobby? Do you play other games?
Sharanya : Yes, art and crafts. I love to play monopoly and uno cards.

ICA : Do you have elder brother or sister in your family? Can you win against you mother, father and siblings ? ( Most of my 7-year old students don't like to play chess with parents. Do you know why? Because they can beat parents too easily !!)
Sharanya : I am the only child, Yes, I can win in chess against my parents. I like to play chess with my parents as they also play tough and I always learn something, specially from my father.

ICA : Have you been to India ? If so,how do you like India?
Sharanya : Yes, I was born in India and I visit once every year. I love INDIA.

25 /4 /2010 को उपरोक्त वर्गों के लिए टीमों का चुनाव हुआ. 19 वर्ष आयु वर्ग में आयुष पाण्डेय तथा वासु बाजपेई बालकों में और श्रेया श्रीवास्तव तथा सान्या बालिकाओं में लखनऊ का प्रतिनिधित्व करेंगे. आयु वर्ग 9 में बालकों में स्वास्तिक देहरन तथा रोहन और बालिकाओं में नंदिनी चुनी गयी.
राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर 19 वर्ष आयु वर्ग के बालक ही देश की टीम का आधार बनते हैं किन्तु स्थानीय स्तर पर इस वर्ग के खिलाडियों में कोई भी खिलाड़ी ऐसा नहीं दिखा जो प्रदेश स्तर पर भी कुछ कर पाने की क्षमता रखता हो.

Tiny Tot to represnt UP in U-11 National Chess

     This young kid Mafrooza Siddiqui who is still in Under -7 category qualified for UP Under-11 chess team recently. So we can hope that she can achieve good place at least in U-7 and U-9 groups at national level if not in U-11.
     Another young kid Swastik Dehran who is is to complete 6 years in August 2010 done very well to score 4.5/7 points in boys group.
     So there is still some hope for UP in chess at least in younger age groups.

ICA - Congratulations for winning Nation Chess Championship. At what age you started playing chess? Who taught you chess ?
Rudraksh- At the age of six I started learning as well as playing chess. Mr S R Pattnaik taught me the game.
ICA- How much time you devote to chess? Does it effects your studies ?
Rudraksh - On an average I used to give 3-4 hours on a daily basis. It does not effect my studies at all.
ICA - Who else in your family plays chess? Do you have any elder brother or sister who plays chess?
Rudraksh - My elder brother plays chess and he is also good at same.
ICA - Do you play any other game? If yes which one ?
Rudraksh - Yes I play cricket.
ICA - How your teachers and other students of your school reacted when you reached back after winning trophy at Ahemdabad.
Rudraksh - When I reached back at school my teachers and friends were overwhelmed with joy and greeted me like anything.

We are trying to put togather a group of chess players in age group of 7-10 years so that they can play with each other on internet. Presently they have to face much older players on net. When enough players got registered with us ( absolutely free ) then we will arrange matches ( and later tournaments) on some free sites at the time indicated by players.
How will it work ? You send the time you are going to be available to play next week or in general( Example Mon to Friday 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.Saturday 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Sunaday 10:00am to 1:00pm) ( actual play will be limited to 1 hour a day only unless you want more. You can play just one day or every day). Now we will try to match your timings/ age with other available players. You can see these schedules on this site for next week. If for some reason you can not play send e-mail in advance so that other player do not have to wait. You can contact us on above e-mail address or using comments below it or on phone.
We also request you to send e-mail addresses of other players so that we can request them to join it.
When is it going to start ? We will soon start it on trial basis. But it will start functioning on regular basis only after final exams of of most kids are over in India.
